The genius of a republic like ours -- where people are elected to represent communities of other people -- is that public servants are not expected to be experts on all issues. Public servants are expected to have a world view (values, beliefs and experiences) and then learn from the wisdom and experience of others as each issue arises. Unfortunately, members of Congress are so dependent on money from big corporations and special interest groups to get elected, they depend a lot more on the knowledge and advice of lobbyists than they do on the average American citizen.
My view of the world is shaped by my faith, how I was raised by my parents, the education they provided for me and my life experiences.
I try to live up to my obligation to love God and to love my neighbor as myself. I also try to live up the call for service above self. My country reminds me that all people are created equal and my faith reminds me that all people are my neighbors. I believe I am called to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with my God.
We are each individuals with rights and responsibilities. I believe we need each other to help protect those rights and we need each other to help us live up to our responsibilities.
The decisions I have made so far on the important issues facing our nation and state are not set in stone, because there is always more to know, but they are a solid start. Please let me know what you think.
